This iconic historic site is dedicated to all Canadians who have served and sacrificed for their country in times of war, conflict, and peace operations.
Unveiled in 1939 by King George VI, the monument, originally commemorating World War I, was later rededicated to include all conflicts. Its central feature, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, holds the remains of a Canadian soldier from Vimy Ridge, symbolizing all unknown Canadians lost to war. The magnificent bronze sculptures, known as the 'Response', depict uniformed figures from all branches of service passing through a triumphal arch, representing the nation's call to duty.
Visiting this national landmark offers a powerful opportunity for reflection and education. It's a place where visitors can pay their respects, learn about Canada's military history, and witness the solemn Changing of the Guard ceremony during summer months. Every November 11th, it becomes the focal point for Remembrance Day ceremonies, drawing thousands to honour the fallen.
The National War Memorial is more than just a monument; it's a living testament to courage, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of a nation.
